Choosing Connection Over Screens

Why We Became a Cell Phone and Smart Watch Free School

Since 2017, our school has proudly been a cell phone and smart watch free environment. This decision was not made lightly — it was a conscious choice to put learning, wellbeing, and genuine human connection first. In a world where screens often dominate daily life, we wanted to create a space where learners can focus, engage, and grow without constant digital distractions.

Why We Made the Decision

To reduce distractions in the classroom and allow learners to focus fully on lessons and activities.

To encourage face-to-face interaction and build stronger, more authentic friendships.

To protect learners from the pressures of social media during the school day.

To prevent issues such as cyberbullying from spilling into the classroom environment.

To foster responsibility and independence, by teaching learners that not every situation requires instant digital access.

To maintain a safe and respectful school atmosphere, where learning remains at the centre.

The Benefits We’ve Seen

Improved concentration and productivity during lessons.

Stronger communication skills as learners talk to each other, not just through devices.

More meaningful friendships built through play, teamwork, and real conversations.

Reduced anxiety and comparison, as learners aren’t exposed to constant social media updates during the school day.

A calmer, more positive learning environment, where respect and focus thrive.

Learners living in the moment, enjoying school activities without the pull of screens.

Why Practising this at Home Matters Too

The benefits of reduced screen time shouldn’t stop at the school gates. By encouraging healthier habits at home, families can support the same values children experience in class. Practising less screen time at home means:

More family connection — shared meals, conversations, and activities strengthen bonds.

Better rest and sleep, as reduced screen use, especially before bed, helps children recharge.

Increased creativity and play, as children find joy in hobbies, reading, and outdoor activities.

Healthier balance, teaching children that while technology is useful, it should not control their time or attention.

Looking back, our decision in 2017 has proven to be a turning point. By removing cell phones and smart watches from the school day, we’ve created a space where children can truly be children — curious, engaged, and connected in the ways that matter most. And when these habits are reinforced at home, the impact is even greater: children grow up learning to use technology wisely while still valuing the importance of presence, balance, and genuine connection.
